Fury at ‘sky-high’ Air NZ prices Air New Zealand’s high prices to fly to and from Nelson have attracted a huge wave of criticism from its own customers. Last week Nelson Weekly reported on several issues that local customers were having with the airline. Since then close to 200 emails, phone calls and comments via the newspaper’s website and Facebook page have flooded in, our largest response ever. A handful of comments were negative about the story but more than 90 per

cent praised the paper for reporting the high prices and other issues including alleged rude behaviour from one of its staff members. A record number of Nelson kids took part in the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Tryathlon, even though the event had to be postponed due to a potential threat from Cycle Lusi earlier in the month. Sanitarium have confirmed that 1811 local kids age seven to 15 years old took part in the Tryathlon, held at Tahunanui Playing Fields and Tahunanui Beach. Sporting celebrities, including Ironman triathlete Cameron Brown and former Tall Black Phill Jones, joined in the fun at the event by cheering kids on and handing out Weet-Bix Kids Tryathlon medals at the finish line. Sanitarium general manager Pierre van Heerden was thrilled with how popular it was, with kids from all over the top of the south taking part. The Weet-Bix Kids Tryathlon, now in its 22nd year, holds the world record for being the largest children’s sporting event of its kind in the world, and will travel to 14 cities and towns throughout New Zealand in 2013 and 2014.

As a comparison, Air New Zealand operates larger A320 aircraft on our Tasman and Pacific Island routes which not only have lower operating costs they also carry up to 168 passengers at a time.” But a retired engineer came forward this week to debunk that reason, saying the operating costs for smaller planes are a lot less. “It is not true that smaller turboprop operated out of Nelson cost more to operate than larger jets on other domestic routes. A 737-800’s operating costs are $US7578 per hour. A Q300 (Nelson) operating costs are $US2688 per hour,” wrote Tony Emsley. “The high late booking price is because the airline knows that people will pay it when they have to travel. Of course no competition does help.” Kelly Kilgour, of Air New Zealand, says the airline does discount fares to various des-

tinations and bigger planes are coming to Nelson more. “We deploy our larger more efficient aircraft to regional centres in line with demand. Nelson is a growth market and we’re increasingly utilising our larger 68 seat ATR aircraft on the Auckland-Nelson route to increase capacity and stimulate demand which will ultimately flow through to being able to offer a greater volume of cheaper fares out of Nelson.” But customers were less than happy with the current state of pricing. Diane Boote says she had to fly to Christchurch for an urgent MRI scan after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The return airfare cost her $456, which she found “ludicrous” and applied for dispensation for urgent medical treatment. “This MRI could not be done in Nelson, and Christchurch was the only alternative. I am a long-time Koru member and also a shareholder in Air New Zealand,” she

pleaded to Air New Zealand. The response from Air New Zealand was: “Unfortunately our guideline cannot cover passengers who need to make last minute bookings for medical visits at other ports. Mrs Boote, I am sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis and wish you well.” Sophie Thorn says when she was skiing down in Queenstown last year she spoke to a few people who had instead of taking a flight from Nelson direct to Queenstown had taken a flight from Nelson to Auckland, Auckland to Brisbane, Brisbane to Queenstown as it was “so much cheaper” than flying Nelson to Queenstown. “It’s disgusting the prices they charge, just because they are taking advantage of Nelson, it’s stripping people from being able to enjoy a nice holiday and in some cases visiting family members around NZ.” Helen Hills wrote that she recently went on-line to book tickets to fly from Nelson

to Melbourne, via Auckland and return from Sydney. “The fares seemed excessive compared to the fares that our friends had booked out of Blenheim for the same destinations. We looked at earlier and later flights from Nelson to connect with the Auckland to Melbourne flight, but they were even more expensive. In the end, we decided to drive over the hill and travel with our friends from Blenheim, saving $606, minus the fuel.” But Air New Zealand says it does release cheap flights. “Our cheapest fares always sell out first for obvious reasons. If a customer is trying to book very close to their travel date or on a particularly popular date the cheapest fares are generally already sold out. However, Air New Zealand continually releases discounted fares to various domestic destinations.” An editorial on this issue is printed on page 13 of this newspaper.

Police after car tyre slasher Police are on the hunt for a car tyre-slasher after they received 32 complaints about their cars having their tyres slashed. Sergeant Mal Drummond says police had received the complaints over the last three months and most of those vehicles had all four of their tyres damaged. The reported incidents have occurred in a range of locations, including the city, Stoke and Motueka. All have occurred at night

and some of the vehicles were parked up private driveways. Mal says they’d like to hear immediately from anyone who sees suspicious behaviour around cars and that the offender or offenders would face serious criminal charges. “This type of mindless vandalism is incredibly inconvenient and expensive for the victims,” he says. He says police believed the offender, or offenders, were using a large chef ’s knife or simi-

lar sharp object. “Carrying a knife like that is an offence in itself, and it concerns me that someone could be hurt if they tried to confront an offender.” He says anyone with information about who may be responsible for the offending should call police on 546 3840. Information can also be given anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Anyone who witnesses this offending taking place should call 111 immediately.

Home electricity bills rose higher in Nelson and Marlborough than anywhere else in the country, a whopping $133, or 6.2 per cent. Nationwide, the average increase was $63 in the 12 months to February, with the biggest increases generally occurring in some smaller cities. Dunedin got off the

lightest, with an increase of $9 and Auckland came second at $13, reported the New Zealand Herald. The figures come from an analysis - done by small retailer Powershop - of survey data published by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Grey Power Nelson, which has been wor-

ried about the increase in power prices, says the findings are not good news for Nelsonians and its president Neville Male says they need to stop. “While this is happening at one end, we have a policy against using wood burners at the other, so we’re being squeezed both ways, something needs to happen.”

SPCA over-run with cats and kittens The Nelson SPCA was already over-run with cats and kittens, and its resources are being stretched again after one man dropped off another 16 kittens to its Motueka site. About once a year the Nelson SPCA puts a call out to the public to say they are overrun with felines. Currently there are 21 adult cats and 20 kittens up for adoption – while that number is still short of its record of 65 cats in 2010, resources are stretched to cope with the higher popular. Feline assistant Carmin Torrance didn’t want to elaborate on the situation where a man dropped off 16 kittens he didn’t want, but says the Nelson SPCA was hopeful they could be brought over from Motueka once its

current numbers had reduced. “Hopefully we can get some moving over the week. I’ve had some others wanting to drop some off but we’ve had to hold them off for another week,” she says. “Once every year [we reach our limit] and it’s generally in this period after Christmas time with people moving or going away but this is the second or third time this year we’ve had to put a call out.” Nelson SPCA takes on unwanted cats even though some other SPCAs do not, because they are worried “what would happen to them if we didn’t?” says Carmin. Carmin says pet owners need to take more responsibility and look for new potential owners before dropping them

The region’s elderly will have an opportunity to find out what 3D really means and have some myths about residential care explored and exploded at this Thursday’s Nelson Tasman Positive Aging Expo at the Headingly Centre, near Richmond. The popular expo is aimed at showcasing the recreational, health and social services that help make ageing a positive experience in the region. It will be opened by the Minister of Senior Citizens Jo Goodhew and will feature 68 stalls, two seminars and a range of activities and demonstrations. Nelson Tasman Positive Ageing Forum chairperson Gail Collingwood says the seminars will be especially interesting with president of the Retirement Villages Association New Zealand, Margaret Owens, discussing residential care and Christchurch Dr Jenny Keightley talking about home-based support starting at 10.15am. Geriatrician Dr Mike Ball’s seminar, titled Life in 3D, will address the issues of dementia, delirium

and depression and Heather Lackner of Alzheimers Nelson will talk about support available for dementia clients and their families, starting at 1pm. Gail says Margaret’s seminar will be popular because there are a number of options available for retirement. “People are making choices about where they want to live when they retire but there are so many different options. Different people also have different perceptions about retirement villages and I’m sure Margaret will help explore the realities and explode the myths.” Gail says there will also be a wide range of stalls and activities including free health checks and free CarFit checks to older drivers. The Expo is aimed at older adults and their families and runs from 10am to 3pm. Admission is free with complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits provided. A free bus service will run from Sundial Square in Richmond to the Expo every 30 minutes from 10am to 1.30pm.

Nelson’s economy growing faster Nelson’s economy is growing faster than the national average and the manufacturing industry is leading the way. Last year, Nelson and Tasman combined to contribute $3,795,000,000 to the nation’s gross domestic product, or 1.8 per cent

of the country’s total GDP, according to figures released last week by Statistics New Zealand. Manufacturing plays a big part in the local economy, with it performing particularly strongly in 2011 when it made up about 13

per cent of the region’s GDP. Between 2007 and 2011, the rental, hiring and real estate services and health care and social assistance industries contributed the most to the region’s GDP increase. In 2012, the main contributor to the

increase was professional, scientific, technical, administrative, support services and agriculture industries. Statistics New Zealand says Nelson and Tasman have a “well-diversified economy” for a small region.

Nelson man celebrates 104th birthday One of Nelson’s oldest residents, Otho Powis, reckons the secret to his longevity is leading an active, healthy lifestyle and abstaining from cigarettes and alcohol. Otho celebrated his 104th birthday with two of his nieces, Richmond sisters Coral Rauhihi and Heather Perry, at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village in Stoke last Thursday. Coral says Otho always told her that remaining active and “never drinking or smoking” were the reasons he has lived so long, although it appears that good genes are also a big factor. “He is the second youngest of five children and they all lived to their 90s,” Coral says. “Our Mum was 99 when she died so there’s some good genes there.” Coral says Otho was born in Waiau

in North Canterbury where he lived and worked as a carpenter. When he retired, Otho and his late wife Joyce moved to Nelson, living in Marybank and then Rutherford Street. Coral, who helped look after Otho for the last 14 years he was at home and his Presbyterian Support caregiver Pam Fraser say Otho has a “wicked sense of humour”. “He was so funny at times,” Pam says. “I can’t repeat some of the things he used to say but he was hilarious.” Coral says Otho remained healthy and active until just over a year ago when he started to lose his mobility. “He was living at home and doing well until recently. We had a heck of a job getting him to leave and come in here - he wanted to stay at home with his garden.”

The businesswomen featured in Nelson Weekly last month to promote the competition and reward the winner of the competition with a $2300 prize package, involving each of their businesses. Annette is a director of boarding and director of international students at Nelson College and was chosen as the winner by Nelson’s first female mayor, Rachel Reese, from a shortlist of six local women. The other five finalists were Heather Brownie, Anne Waters, Caroline Wade, Lin Ginty and Rita Serfontein.

Annette is battling melanoma and was nominated for the title by her friend, Christine Sutherland. In her nomination, which tells of Annette’s courage and strength in the face of adversity, Christine wrote: “What makes Annette special is her incredibly positive attitude.” Annettee says she is delighted to win. “I’m overwhelmed and humbled. When I was first told of the nomination, I asked if the caller was sure they had the right person. I’m really looking forward to the beautiful prizes, but feel grateful that this also gives me an opportunity to spread the ‘get it checked’ message, Melanoma is a sneaky cancer, it can manifest itself in unusual places, so you don’t always know you have it.”

Shoppers at the Richmond Mall were treated to musical entertainment on Thursday night, with the first of the Rock da House mini concerts being held in the food court. The Richmond Mall will host an hour long performance every two-to-three weeks by a different school involved in the Rock da House initiative, right up until the official Richmond Mall Rock da House concert in Motueka in August. Musical director John Phillips says the first performance, which featured friend and family duos, was a big success. “It was just a really nice atmosphere and being nice and relaxed was good for the performers too,” he says. “I think it was great, eh.” Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says the feedback had been really positive. John says the mall gave the performers a “ready-made-audience”. “That’s the whole idea. People from all walks of life will be exposed to all sorts of different music and hopefully it encourages them to get their children into it.” The next performance will be by Brightwater School on April 10, starting at 6:30pm.

For the first time Dramatix Theatre Development Trust is offering the chance to experience the living history of their world war trench at night. The group will be taking guided tours through the living history displays at Founders Heritage Park, the seventh year Dramatix has held its annual Anzac commemorations. “We’ve wanted to do this other years and have had people ask for this as there’s no doubt, dark night adds to the intensity of our living history displays,” says organiser TJ Ramsay. The night tours will have an R16 element and not for younger people or those who don’t want to experience trench warfare at its most grim. “For our three day ‘Anzac Experience’ event and for our fortnight long TDC Education Programme, we target the dramatic impact to suit younger and family audiences. The Night Time tours will allow us to push the level of intensity,” she says. TJ says the show will once again be dramatic. “We’re not a big team at all and what we achieve makes me very proud. That there is nowhere else in New Zealand where living history can be experienced to this degree makes our event truly unique. It all comes down to the passionate commitment of a few people and the generosity of our sponsors.” Bookings are essential for the guided night tours as groups need to be scheduled and tickets are $10 per head. Sick teen still fundraising

Bettie McInnes and Bernice Stott at the Save the Children Fair which was held for the 20th year at the Stoke Memorial Hall. Save the Children are an international organisation and the Nelson branch is part of Save the Children New Zealand. This year they are giving money to two emergency areas. One is in Syria for the people who are being relocated to Lebanon where they are living in makeshift conditions and the other half of the fundraised money will be going to the Philippines to rebuild classrooms and supply educational material after Typhoon Haiyan hit last year. Sixty volunteers have helped with the stalls for the fair and organisers are extremely grateful for their work. It was a tremendous response from the public and a total of $8362 was raised which they are very happy to be able to pass on. shave her hair and donate it to Pantene who uses the hair to make wigs for cancer patients. Georgia Ferris has had a year from hell but it isn’t stopping her from taking on a fundraising mission usually reserved for healthy people trying to help people like her. Georgia, 17, was a healthy teenager until May last year, when a gastro intestinal disorder left her unable to attend school or her part time job and having to spend months in hospitals around the country. It was in one of those hospitals – Auckland Public – that Georgia met a fellow patient, a woman called Briar Lobb. When they first met Georgia remembers thinking she was around 11 years old and was happy there was another “kid” in the hospital. Later that day she found out Briar was in fact 26 but was so frail because cancer had left her terminally ill. Georgia says Briar was so positive and full of life that she had a remarkable impact on her and the two became close friends over the five weeks they spent together in hospital. Earlier this year, Briar lost her fight with cancer and when Georgia found out she was herself battling serious complications of her illness at Christchurch hospital. Georgia decided to participate in the Relay for Life in Nelson last month to honour Briar and while there saw some girls shaving their heads to raise

Editorial: Air NZ needs to sort its prices Steve Page Air New Zealand is being a bit naughty. They have a public relations division to “snow” a story when it arises and the story that arises most often? Overcharging on their fares. Let’s have a look at Nelson. Air New Zealand holds the monopoly with around 95 per cent of passengers flying with Air NZ. Due to Nelson’s short-ish runway, no jets can fly in, so there is no real competition and the location is ripe for the plucking. No competition, a seemingly more affluent customer and the fourth busiest airport in NZ make this an airline’s dream. It’s called a ripe revenue stream and any business would look at this situation and basically find out how far the prices can be pushed up. That’s not really a super-bad thing but there has to be limits. Air NZ state they do have “compassionate fares” and advise passengers that for an extra $12 they can insure the fare if they have to change it. But how it works is that you change the ticket, pay the extra and then when you get back from your journey you fill out the 3-4 page claim form and if you can still be bothered send it away for consideration and even then you may be refused. We were unable to locate anyone who had taken advantage of the compassionate airfares and in one instance as one passenger said, “it’s my business so I’m not comfortable explaining my personal and often very private circumstances to a complete stranger”. Why are we putting up with this? You can be sure the only thing that will stop this is the introduction of a competitor. Air NZ has shown in the past they are quite comfortable putting up with the complaints and squawking of the Nelson people because the business model is so lucrative. The old snow job of it being more expensive to operate from Nelson than a huge jet flying overseas is just PR hype. The prices are all relative. A small prop plane, such as those used here in Nelson,

are cheaper to run, crew, land and pay for. So why not match the fares accordingly? Here’s what we have been told by our readers as far as recent unbelievable prices go: $1200 return for two to Christchurch, $832 one way for two to Auckland, $2400 for two to Whakatane return and $789 return for one person to Dunedin. We’ve also heard of a $105 charge just to change a changeable airfare for three to Wellington. And $1100 for a return fare to Bluff to bury a relative. These fares are on a par with international fares. Most of these were bookings made one week out. There is a social responsibility on Air NZ’s part to provide a reliable, competitive service that also recognises compassionate and emergency situations and reacts accordingly. Not drop the level of service on board, charge at every whim, and continue to put badly-behaved staff, such as in last week’s issue, in front of the public. The public need to be treated with dignity and respect. You know we get better service from the health sector now than from Air NZ. Women’s service group turns 50

A Nelson service club is preparing to host its 50th anniversary celebrations this weekend, when they can reflect on a significant impact on the city. Soroptimist International of Nelson was chartered on April 4, 1964, when membership cost two guineas. Internationally, Soroptimist International has more than 83,000 members in 127 countries and 32 of those members are from the Nelson group. Over the past five decades the group has remained relatively strong in numbers and still raises and donates thousands of dollars to charities each year. Their most enduring fundraiser is the Christmas puddings, which this year will celebrate 30 consecutive years in action. Soroptimist members make the puddings from a recipe that was given to them 30 years ago from a Soroptimist member in the United States. But their largest fundraiser was Toy Fantasia, which was held four

times over eight years in the mid80s and early 90s. That fundraiser earned them $66,000 in total and the interest earned from that money is still distributed to local charity groups each Christmas. In the early years, members of the newly-formed group fundraised to provide amenities for an occupant in the extension of Whareama Hospital in Stoke and their first international project was to provide money for furnishing a nursery for disabled children in Saigon. More recently, the group has been responsible for the Teen Parent Unit at Auckland Point School, assisting both in financially and in time and man-power in helping get the unit off the ground. Organiser of the anniversary celebrations, Gay Northcott, says delegates from around New Zealand will be in town for a lunch and slide show presentation and they are hoping it will include a foundation member, Joy Anderson.

Swimmers off to compete in Oz

For the first time ever, Tasman Swim Club will send five swimmers to the Australia Age Championship. But it’s not a matter of throwing them in the deep end, most of the qualifiers are realistic final prospects. The Tasman Swim Club team is made up of Sam McKenzie, Talya Harwood, Caitlin Delany, Sara Gane and Thomas Heaton. Both Sam, 14, and Thomas, 15, are ranked within the top ten in their respective freestyle events, and coach Andy Adair expects to be back for three or four nights of finals during the six day competition. The Georgina Hope Swimmers Foundation Australia Age Championship will be held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre from April 14. At the championship, Caitlin will compete in the female 15 100m breaststroke, Sara will race in the female 15 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke, Talya has qualified for the female 14 800m freestyle, Thomas will race in both the male 15 1500m freestyle and 400m freestyle,

The water in Tasman Bay is very hot at over 20 degrees, with lots of albacore tuna now being caught all over the bay in 40 metres of water. The kingfish are still in massive numbers around the Boulder Bank and Motueka spat farms with the spearos getting the bigger ones by hand picking them. Land based fishing is also doing well with Kina Beach, Mapua and the Back Beach producing some good pannie snapper. Kenepuru has finally started to fire with some good double digit fish getting landed now for those putting the hard yards in. Only a couple of months of the fishing season left so if you haven’t been out to get a tuna now is the time as the water will start to cool off from now on. This will also see the snapper start to move out deeper and the kingfish start to leave the bay. It also means the big kingfish and snapper will turn up around D’Urville Island in the next couple of months and hopefully give us as good a season as we had last year.

With the amount of feed that’s been around this year I would not be surprised if it’s a very good winter fishery. Also can report huge schools of anchovies with thousands of birds feeding and big schools of kawahai chasing them, great fun and easy to catch! Kayak fishing in the region has been great this past month with big work ups from kahawai adding to the sport and the thrill on the yaks. Plenty of great sized snapper between 6 and 10 pounds still about and being caught. The kayaking numbers are increasing and we counted 10 in the bay this past weekend. It is especially good to see some younger people getting in to it with their parents. With amazing weather still with us there is still plenty of time for getting out there and trying your luck. Hopefully the forecast for Easter will be good and also the school holidays. They will provide an ideal last opportunity to get some snapper in Tasman Bay before the water temperature cools and the fish move out to deeper waters. As this happens the better places to fish will be around Pepin Island, Cable and Delaware Bays.
